Coaching + Consulting

Individual coaching aims at helping you cross the chasm between where you are now and where you could be...that maybe you can’t even see yet. Simultaneously, I teach a method of self-coaching so you can continue your learning and growth without me. I am a big believer that you have a wise inner coach that, with support, will surface to guide you on.

Unlike a traditional model of coaching that focuses on changing behavior alone, we get “behind” behavior to the embedded habits of perception, thinking, and emotion that drive it. This, combined with practice-based learning, enables both more profound and more enduring change. One of the ways we do this is by using the Enneagram to short cut self-insight, as well as to map the journey of growth.

In the 30 years that I have been coaching, I have worked with executives from Fortune 50 companies to tiny start-ups, graduate school deans, physicians, and non-profit leaders, as well as coaches, consultants, therapists, folks in sales, and people seeking personal growth and renewal.

Short-term Learning, Integration, and Energy Work

People also call on me for shorter term coaching engagements such as:

  • Mentoring and consultation for incorporating the wisdom of the Enneagram and the Enneagram Symbol into coaching, consulting, or therapeutic work.

  • Integration coaching: lending my experience with symbolism and archetypal wisdom to forward insight and meaning-making related to your independent journey experiences with non-ordinary states of consciousness.

  • Energy work to clarify specific issues and blocks, move energy, and support your own inner healing intelligence. VortexHealing® is a registered service mark of the R. Weinman VH Trust. • In the state of Oregon I am licensed to facilitate legal psilocybin sessions at state-approved Service Centers, which includes preparation and integration. People use this work to assist in healing, creativity, connection, well-being. It’s important to do your own research about whether the work is safe and right for you.

I help leaders extend their impact by working to integrate and develop teams as well. With a combination of individual coaching and team focus, we help improve the performance, culture, and cohesion of individuals and the team as a whole. This work can be particularly important in growing leaders capable of higher-level influence and leading change.

Teams

Workshops & Speaking Engagements

Here we create what you need: an engaging talk on specific topics such as influence, growing your leadership, or women and power; an introduction to the Enneagram Symbol as a journey of transformation, or a multi-day workshop for team or large-group development in your organization using the Enneagram or The Enneagram Journey.

Mid-career I began wondering how to take what I do with individual executives and offer it to larger groups of people who would not otherwise get the opportunity for 1-1 coaching. As a result, I pioneered a leadership development approach that teaches principles and practices for self-coaching, in a context of group learning, and enables the realization of individual goals while developing culture and engagement. To do this at scale, I partner with existing organizational systems and leaders to ensure the work is in service of the shared mission.

Testimonials

“Jennifer Joss is, by a country mile, the best leadership development coach I have seen in my life. I have known Jennifer for 27 years, worked with her directly in two different organizations, and she has yet to run out of ways to help me get better as a leader. Her approach to the work is smart, non-intimidating, fun (yes, development can actually be fun!) and extremely effective. She pairs science and proven concepts with practical exercises to help us grow into the best version of ourselves. The joy and meaning I experience in my life and work has been immeasurably shaped by Jennifer.”

- Shari Ballard, CEO Minnesota United, former Sr. EVP, Best Buy

I can describe JJ in just one word. Fantastic!! She is a fantastic coach and teacher that has the unique ability to meet you where you are, challenge your thinking, and unlock skills you did not know you had — all of this in service of making you a better, more effective leader. Not only have I trusted JJ with my leadership team and my entire territory, I also trust her to help me sort out the most challenging and difficult situations I face in my role.

- Ray Sliva, EVP Stores, Dick’s Sporting Goods

“Jennifer Joss was my executive coach for nearly two years, which made a profound impact on my work and my life. She coached me on planning and leading an organization of over 200 professionals. She helped me know how to show up at every meeting, how to manage my emotions, figure out how to take care of myself, and better ways to communicate in the workplace. She encouraged me to take the 1:1 meetings as seriously as my large team meetings. She helped me to understand myself and use my strengths to move the organization. I have not just become a better academic leader through working with Jennifer, I have become a better person. Jennifer is an extraordinary coach, who also happens to be a lot of fun. I recommend her to everyone.”

- Dr. Ellen McIntyre, Dean, Graduate School of Education, University of Tennessee, Knoxville

“I met JJ during my time on a leadership development forum at Best Buy. Up until that point, I had always felt that inspiration came from other people…as though only some people had been born with this ability. Learning from JJ changed that for me.

JJ taught me the importance of focusing on what you are passionate about and being on purpose with how you find inspiration within. Being your own coach was not something I had done at that point on my leadership journey. I had always relied on others to coach, to inspire and to provide constructive feedback to me. To be able to draw on the well of my own experiences and provide vision and inspiration from those moments, for myself and others, was new.

During the most challenging of times, and certainly with heightened frequency during the last three years, I have found that my internal coaching and passion for people has provided me the skills to help my family, my friends and my coworkers during incredibly stressful situations. The ability to lead through a disruptive environment, provide optimism and clarity began with looking inward, instead of outward, and I am grateful for JJ's sharing this idea with me during our time together.”

- Vanessa Anderson

“I have worked with Dr. Jennifer Joss in many capacities. She was an integral partner in building out a year-long development program for women in leadership at a fortune 50 company. Her subject matter expertise is impressive and her ability to adjust to our needs, give advice from previous experience and hear our objectives clearly, made her an excellent partner for a successful program. She helped design quarterly teach outs using the Enneagram as a platform, worked with small groups of participants in between group sessions, held leadership check-ins, and helped develop an app for tracking progress. Not only did the curriculum include leadership strategies but also tactical components necessary to develop future leaders.

She was also a trusted executive coach, working not only with me, but also fully integrated with my executive team, guiding and advising for optimum team synergy and ultimately winning performance. Jennifer is so smart, funny, engaging and truly cares about helping people become better leaders as well as better people.”

- Mary Stoddart, Managing Principle, Consultant & Coach

“I feel extremely grateful to have Dr. Jen Joss as my therapy consultant. Since our first meeting together, Jen has been warm, welcoming, and brilliantly insightful. Her capacity to weave together concepts from different theologies, cultural narratives, and ideas rooted in the Enneagram has been essential for me gaining a deeper perspective on my therapy clients’ needs and growth paths. I always look forward to my conversations with Jen, because I know I’ll leave with some new insight or plan for optimizing my work relationships. I appreciate her ability to not only understand and track my clients, but also to support my own evolution to become a more balanced individual and effective psychologist. I can’t imagine navigating my clinical work without her support.”

- Dr. Mollie Pleet, Psychologist

“I had the privilege of working with Dr. Joss during my toughest career year. My organization made a somewhat controversial decision, and she taught me a trick that I still use today. Jennifer is smart, funny, and wise. The breadth and depth of her knowledge is incomparable, and it was a real privilege to work with her. I am a better leader and a better person just for knowing her!”

- Dee Anne Everson, CEO, United Way of Jackson County

“My conversations with Dr. JJ. were quite remarkable, thoughtful, insightful exchanges in which I learned about that which is usually hidden from my sight. I found her sensitive, perceptive, and open, as she navigated that foggy space in my leaderly life. Dr. JJ. used her clear theoretical frame with sensitivity, carefully matching her language to allow me to propel myself into a new place. I would recommend her approach without hesitation to anyone wanting a guide on their journey or insight about their thinking and acting.”

- Dr. Ann Taylor, Dean, College of Education, University of Missouri-St. Louis

“I had the opportunity to work with Dr. JJ in her small group coaching circles and it was by far the best professional development of my career. Dr. JJ developed tools and resources that we used to self-reflect, as well as to get meaningful feedback from our work peers and leaders, which we used to incorporate into self-development plans. Dr. JJ encouraged me to try new tactics to improve my effectiveness. Even to this day I think of her advice to try new strategies and observe how they play out. I can still hear her say “And how did that work out for you?” I would gladly take part in any coaching led by Dr. JJ - truly the best.”

- Anne Loughrey, Development Director, Salo, A Korn Ferry Company

“I had the pleasure of working with Jennifer through all phases of our organization’s strategic planning. Her processes were thorough and well thought out, and her approach kept our mission at the forefront of this work. I feel that Jennifer was led by her desire to see the best outcome for our organization and our clients. I was able to be transparent about my/our challenges and she helped me work through them, which empowered me to improve my leadership. I would recommend Jennifer for facilitation, planning, and/or coaching.”

- Jennifer Mylenek, Executive Director, CASA of Jackson County

“JJ has had a tremendous impact on me through her coaching and consulting. Not only did I learn about myself, she also gave me the tools to self-coach. This has helped to shape me into the leader that I am today, and has had a significant impact on my confidence and overall happiness. I am an Enneagram enthusiast now, and use it every day in my current role. It has helped to shape my team into true conscious leaders. I am so thankful to have had the opportunity to learn from JJ and be able to also call her friend.”

- Susi Chaplin, VP HR, Confluent Health

“I had the pleasure of being introduced to Jennifer as an executive coach after having little success with past coaches. BEST coach ever! Whether in person or on the phone she could narrow in swiftly on your needs and guide you on a new approach that was simple yet incredibly effective. Jennifer and I then took this development process to my leaders, to help them learn to use themselves as instruments of change, with a mix of group instruction and individual coaching. Their energy, enthusiasm and interest in learning led to the Enneagram becoming pervasive throughout Best Buy. Jennifer is simply the best at what she can bring to any individual seeking to learn and grow as a leader.”

- Nancy Brooks, former VP Procurement, Best Buy
